Chester Gould - A Conscientious Worker
The great Chester Gould, true square and creator of Dick Tracy, perhaps the most genuinely strange comic strip embraced by the unstrange masses. Pictures like this, of mid-century cartoonists ensconced in their wainscoted, tiled studios, windows open to birch trees, shirtsleeves rolled up, pipe at hand, probably did more to encourage my cartooning aspirations than the actual cartoons they created. Too bad it was all gone before I was even born.
