Second in a Series
Second collection of songs rounded up from my poor hard drive (listen to part one here).
Hope you like:
1. "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" by Bill Cosby from Hooray for the Salvation Army Band
I grew up listening to Cosby's comedy records, which I still think are pretty entertaining, if not the least bit subversive or critical like Richard Pryor, etc. I had no idea he recorded several albums of "songs" until I was an adult.
2. "Movie Star" by Prince from Crystal Ball
Prince is a genius, of course, but one aspect of his talent too often overlooked is his wicked sense of humor. I think this song is hilarious, though as his latent mental illness has begun to manifest itself (as it does with all great pop stars) I'm not sure it's as funny as it is sad. This song first appeared "officially" on his Crystal Ball set, but apparently made the rounds long before that on the Dream Factory bootlegs - an amazing collection of songs, many of which later became Sign of the Times. I have to confess I don't understand the meaning of the line "What's the biggest lake you've ever been in?"
3. "For Your Love and For Your Love Suite" by Chilly from For Your Love
Nice disco (?) cover of the Yardbirds song.
4. "Our Lips are Sealed" by the Go-Go's from Beauty and the Beat
5. "KM1" by Michael Rother from Katzenmusik
Krautrock pioneer, member of Kraftwerk, Harmonia and (one of my very favorites) Neu!
6. "Spruchnummer [G20]" by the Conet Project from the Conet Project disc 3
7. "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd from (originally) Wish You Were Here (this version from the best-of Echoes)
Yeah, I know... Pink Floyd. I don't care, I really dig 'em. Obviously the Syd Barrett stuff is superior, but for some reason I listen more to some of the other discs, like Meddle and WYWH.
8. "Introit" by William Sheller from Lux Aeterna
9. "Cortez the Killer" by Neil Young from (originally) Zuma (this version from Decade)
Love this, some really haunting, epic imagery in the words, and the music is simultaneously angry and sad.
10. "Pech Onderweg" by Andre van Duin from Andre van Duin - 2
11. "Stutterology" by Hugo Montenegro from Love Theme from the Godfather
When Montenegro was "on" he was amazing.
12. "You'll Never Catch the Sun" by Louis Philippe from Azure
Absolutely gorgeous, yearning and languorous at the same time.
13. "Fujiyama 1" by Moondog from Elpmas
One of the great geniuses of mid-century American music, totally unclassifiable.
14. "We Don't Have to Think Like That Anymore" by Cliff Martinez from the Solaris Original Sountrack
The only good thing about Steven Soderbergh's remake of Tarkovsky's great film was the soundtrack.
15. "Like Chop" by the Beach Boys from Dumb Angel 16
A total throwaway track, nothing I would ever consider using as an example of Brian Wilson's genius, but it's fun, and it fits here.
16. "Nova Express Times Survey on Alcoholism" by Peter & Raymond from Shut Up, Little Man!
Only the funniest audio recording in the history of civilization is all.
17. "The Little Girl from Mars" by Perrey-Kingsley from The Out Sound From Way In!
Typically amazing tape construction by two of my favorite lab-coat-wearing musicians.
18. "Fire Cracker" by Yellow Magic Orchestra from Yellow Magic Orchestra
Thank you, Japan.
19. "Bauchredner by Gastr Del Sol from Camoufleur
