James Alexander

james_alexander_rdcb (0).jpgNormally I find illustrations I'd like to post here and they end up sitting in a huge pile for about six months. But I came across these - the work of James Alexander - and was impressed and excited enough to scan and post them right away. The first eight here are from the Reader's Digest Condensed Books Spring 1953 volume. I really couldn't find anything online about Alexander, but his style here is lovely. Closer inspection reveals some problems with the work: a bit of stiffness, weird and inconsistent proportions, etc. But the precise, static rendering is impressive, and the coloring is gorgeous. I wish I could find more examples of his stuff!

james_alexander_rdcb (8).jpgThese final three appeared in the Reader's Digest Condensed Books Winter 1954 edition. These are a bit more stylized and striking -- I love 'em.

These are great. I just came across them I have tear-sheets of The Three Faces of Eve that he illustrated for Readers Digest. Beautiful work.
