Early George Carlson

gc-(0).jpgCover art and several interior pages by peculiar "Golden Age" cartoonist George Carlson for something called John Martin's Big Book, from 1929. The cover art and first three pages here are certainly by his hand, as the work is signed. However...

gc-(5).jpg... I'm not so sure about the remaing pages, though they appear to match his style, as there are other, similar-but-not-quite illustrations throughout the book which are signed with different names.

Anyway, you can see much more of his comics work in Dan Nadel's Art Out of Time as well as The Smithsonian Book of Comic-Book Comics.

Two collections of Carlson's puzzle pages from the John Martin magazine were published in the 90s, under the titles Peter Puzzlemaker and Peter Puzzlemaker Returns! Both are readily available on Amazon.
