The True Book of Trees
A few sample pages and details from Illa Podendorf's The True Book of Trees, illustrated by Richard Gates. This edition is from 1963. The colors and printing techniques here are really unusual... can't figure out what method Gates used, but he seemed to be keenly aware of the printing process. Is this some kind of lithography? I have no idea, but the scratched textures and layered hues give the images a nice tactile quality.
