Keith Henderson's "Green Mansions"
Several images here from Keith Henderson, illustrating a novel from 1904. Not sure when the pictures were actually made - for the first edition of the novel or a later one - though they appear to be from early in the century. I could be wrong, but they look like woodcuts. I'm not ape-shit crazy about these, but they're nice enough. I like the big double-page spreads best; they really impart a sense of scale, be it the vast darkness of the empty night or a swarm of giant vines, etc.
Glad to find your page. I just found a copy of this book amongst many old books in our cellar, and was impressed, as you were, by the artwork. Linocuts, maybe? I've tried to look up some info on Keith Henderson, but no luck, so far. My copy is a 'Plaza Edition' and has no dust jacket (just a tooled front and back cover, and pages that have to be cut...all but one were cut. Interested to see the dust jacket you have...powerful cover art! I also found another book, The Children's Art Book, by Geoffrey Holme (publ. The Studio, London and New York, 1938 1st printing, 2nd. 1939, 3rd, 1942 and 4th 1946, which is the one I have). In it, there is also an illustration by Keith Henderson, of a young man also perhaps a linocut, or woodcut.
Do you collect books, art?
If you have found out anything else about Keith Henderson, I'd be interested in knowing. Thanks in advance.
