Green Scales

dragon.jpgThis illustration accompanied an ad in an old issue of Fortune magazine from, I think, 1955. The ad was for Ellicott "Dragon" dredges... the company is still around, and if you have a look at their site you'll see a vintage ad featuring a similar dragon (and here). I can't tell if the image is clip-art or if it was specifically created by an artist for the company; there's some kind of signature (?) in the lower left: "ECP". Anyway, it's a striking image, though I don't know why a dragon would be associated with dredges... perhaps an iron foundry, but Dredges? Wouldn't something like, say, a fire-breathing beaver be more appropriate?
