Barefoot with Eldon Dedini

bwed (1).jpgSeveral Eldon Dedini cartoons illustrating a book called Barefoot Boy with Cheek, by Max Shulman, from 1959. Dedini's work for Playboy has been collected in An Orgy of Playboy's Eldon Dedini from Fantagraphics Books. I haven't actually seen that enticing volume because I'm poor and the local library doesn't carry it, so hopefully I haven't just scanned and posted a bunch of images already available there. But this is pretty good stuff, not nearly as lovely and lush as his color magazine work, but still robustly drawn.

bwed (2).jpgThe front cover (above) suffers from off-register printing, so here's a detail from the back cover which repeats a portion of the the same image, only with slightly improved quality.

Absolutely top notch stuff that's new to me. Thanks for this. I am immediately babbling about this on my blog and sending people to your blog!

Thanks, guys.

I notice in the last scan another Shulman book ("Rally Round the Flag...") that appears to have a Dedini cover (and interior drawings?). There are several copies listed right now on ebay, with color photos. Anyone seen that volume?

Long shot, but the pose & style of the female figure remind me of Dedini

Wow, thanks. That *does* look like Dedini, doesn't it? I wonder, too, if it might be Frank Kelly Freas?
