The Wordless World of Roy Doty

rd1.jpgRoy Doty's work is among the first cartooning I remember seeing and studying as a form of expression. As a youngster I saw his "Wordless Workshop" in Popular Mechanics, though apparently it's been published in various titles at various times.

I've got a few illustrations here from a 1964 book called The Personal Touch In Interior Decorating, by Betty Pepis. At this point Doty's style wasn't quite as idiosyncratic as his earlier work (for some amazing, elaborate examples, visit Leif Peng's flickr page here) but it's still great stuff. Doty is still alive and still working - visit his personal page for more info.

Great stuff, Jeff! Roy's work deserves more trumpeting!

Thanks for posting these rarities, Jeff - and for the plug for TI!

I grew up "reading" Wordless Workshop" in my dad's Pop Mech mags, too. A doty fan from way back... and didn't even know it!
