Lee Gregori

look01.jpgCame across this paperback of John Osborne's play, Look Back in Anger, with illustrations by Lee Gregori. The play, from 1956, was adapted to film by Tony Richardson in 1958; this printing of the book is from 1967. Not sure if the illustrations are from the original issuing of the volume or a later edition. And I haven't seen the film so I couldn't say how much - if at all - Gregori was influenced by the look of the film, but his drawings here do have something of the "kitchen sink" quality attributed to the work of Richardson, Lindsay Anderson, etc.

If any info about Gregori exists online, I sure wasn't able to find it. Apparently he illustrated (or created cover art for) Call of the Wild and Swiss Family Robinson, if not many others unrecorded.

Jeff; Thanks for alerting me to this wonderful post you've created showing the work of Leon Gregori! I've come across his work here and there in various magazines from the 50's - but so far have only ever scanned this one image. He seems to have been a specialist in line art... but I haven't had any more luck finding biographical info than you have.

Perhaps someone who knew him - a family member? - will find your post and tell you more. We can only hope!

Cheers and thanks again - L ;-)

Wow, the piece you linked to is pretty remarkable, much more elaborate than the ones I posted here. Great linework, as you say.

Thanks!
